The Dark Tale of Axlar-Björn: Iceland's Only Serial Killer

In the annals of history, there are individuals whose crimes transcend time, leaving a lasting mark on society. One such sinister figure is Björn Pétursson, better known as Axlar-Björn, the only known serial killer in the history of Iceland. Axlar-Björn's criminal activities began around 1570 when he went to work at the farm of a wealthy neighbor named Ormur Þorleifsson. Over time, he committed his first murder at the age of 15, having had a haunting dream that set him on a path of violence. His primary modus operandi involved drowning his victims in a pond at the edge of the picturesque Búðarhraun lava field, where he would then hide their bodies.


Given that the accounts of Axlar-Björn's crimes were recorded 250–300 years after his execution, the truth is often intertwined with folklore and myths. As a result, the number of victims attributed to him varies, with some records suggesting nine while others speculate up to eighteen victims. Local suspicions grew as travelers disappeared in the area, yet Axlar-Björn remained protected by his friendship with Guðmundur, Ormur's son, who owned the land.


Axlar-Björn's reign of terror came to an end in 1596 when he was finally apprehended. Although he initially confessed to nine murders, further investigations led authorities to discover more bodies buried on his farm. He was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging, drawn and quartered. His remains were chopped into pieces and put on stakes, marking a violent end to his violent reign.


The story of Axlar-Björn is lost in the mists of time, leaving an enigmatic tale that seems to seep out of the very lava fields of Snæfellsnes. His name remains etched in history as the only known serial killer in Iceland, forever linked to the horror he inflicted upon innocent travelers who crossed his path.
